I admit it: I am a sports junkie. Not just the actual watching of the sports, but I am also a sports talk junkie. I watch a number of sports programs where talking heads debate the issues or the games of the day. I also have a sports radio station in my presets on the radio. And I'm also an observer of our culture, which is of course going in a direction that I am less than pleased with. Like many others, I pray for our culture and our leaders, but today I found myself surprised when I should not have
Let me point out that I don't have "ALL" the facts, but here's what I have figured out today. A prominent NFL quarterback was speaking to a group of fellow Christians and stated that he was in his girlfriends life to "bless her," and that included remaining sexually inactive until they were married. Seems legitimate to me, considering that is STILL the standard set forth by God in His word. But you would have thought he had grown another head and was speaking as an alien from a distant galaxy to hear these folks (mostly men) comment on this. It was as if a young man trying to keep his way pure was SO FAR outside their realm of understanding that to even speak this way was nonsensical. What bothers me most is that we have kids who are going to grow up in this culture where trying to live to a Biblical standard will be mocked and ridiculed. It is more important than ever that Christians do our job to educate and train our children in how to live a Godly life, because they will not get a Biblical world view from the culture. As one meme said it: "We must teach our children to follow Jesus, or the world will teach them not to." I guess I knew where we were living, but today gave me a solid reminder. Lord, help me as a dad, a pastor, and a teacher to live a life of Godliness that will have a positive impact on those in my life.
